Mindset towards Adapting – Tom Seaman

How important is your mindset to adapting to difficult challenges? In this episode I talk with someone that changed his mindset and he was able to then change his position in life for the better. Tom Seaman is an author who has published countless articles and a book focused on coping strategies and tools for dealing with physical and mental challenges of life, especially when dealing with chronic health conditions, relationship issues, depression, anxiety, and setbacks. Tom had to learn to navigate life with a painful neurological movement disorder (Dystonia) that left him broken and, at points, unable to physically move, to eventually adapting, healing, and developing a fulfilling life as a life coach, author, and speaker. Through research and experience (personal and professional) Tom learned strategies for battling back when the rock one is under seems too heavy to lift.

The first half of the interview focuses on,
  • Tom tells his story about how he couldn’t physically move at points, he couldn’t function within everyday life, and dealing with thoughts of not wanting to live.  He explains how his life began to turn in such a positive manner and in turn how he began to heal physically and mentally.
  • Tom explains why he became an author focused on developing coping strategies and tools for dealing with various physical and mental challenges in life.
  • Tom explains why he spends his time and efforts helping others adapt, via coaching and writing.
The second half of the interview focuses on,
  • The mindset needed to dig oneself out from a bad situation.
  • Coping mechanisms for mental and even physical pain.
  • Going from viewing oneself as a victim to someone with significant opportunities.
  • Tools and techniques that help one go from a bad situation, to a healthier situation.

Further Information About Tom

When Tom developed a debilitating neurological movement disorder in 2001 called Dystonia, he basically lost everything which altered the course of his life in ways he never imagined possible. After numerous failed treatments and years of physical and mental pain, he dedicated himself to learning and applying a variety of symptom management techniques that greatly improved his quality of life. In addition to better managing his dystonia, he lost 150 pounds he gained due to his sedentary lifestyle with chronic pain. Wanting to help others who are suffering with their life challenges, in 2010, Tom returned to school and became a Certified Professional Life Coach. He is now helping people all over the world learn to adapt and improve their lives.

In 2015, Tom published the book, Diagnosis Dystonia: Navigating the Journey, which was recognized by the Michael J. Fox Foundation and put on their suggested list of resources. This combination autobiography, self-help, education book not only chronicles his long battle with this neurological movement disorder, anxiety, depression, and obesity, it provides a roadmap for living a healthy, balanced life to transcend suffering. With practical strategies and tools, this book is useful for helping anyone work through any difficult life circumstance, health or otherwise, and improve their quality of life.

Tom states, “I have been faced with major challenges throughout my life, all of which came with significant opportunities. What helps me jump over hurdles is my belief that everything has a solution. There is nothing that can’t be altered to improve our quality of life. Every obstacle provides opportunity for us to become better people and every day as a life coach I am grateful for the chance to help myself and others achieve their personal best.”
